The three series are defined by what they absorb. BOS is oleophilic and hydrophobic — it absorbs oil and repels water, making it the choice for oil on water, harbours, vessels, tank farms and workshop oil spills. HOS is a chemical sorbent, normally high-visibility yellow, and handles acids, bases, solvents, water-based chemicals and many corrosive liquids — suited to laboratories, chemical storage and hazardous material areas. MOS is a universal sorbent that takes oil, water, coolants and general industrial fluids, and is used for routine maintenance, workshop floors and traffic aisles. Rule of thumb: oil in the presence of water, use BOS; chemical or unidentified liquid, use HOS; everyday mixed fluids, use MOS.

Yes. BOS products are made from polypropylene meltblown media whose fibres are inherently oleophilic and hydrophobic. They selectively absorb hydrocarbons while taking up very little water, so on open water they pick up only the floating oil and continue to float once saturated, which makes recovery straightforward. This is why the BOS series is used for marine, river, harbour and dockside spill response.

Absorbency is stated as the total volume a pack, roll or piece can take up, expressed in L/Pack. For typical configurations: 40 cm × 50 cm pads at 100 pcs per pack hold about 120 L; a 40 cm × 50 m roll holds about 60 L; 7.6 cm × 120 cm socks at 20 pcs per pack hold about 90 L; Ø12.7 cm × 3 m booms at 4 pcs per carton hold about 108 L, and the Ø20 cm × 3 m size about 206 L. Actual capacity varies with fluid viscosity, temperature and how the product is deployed, so size your stock against the expected spill volume and replacement frequency.

Saturated sorbents must be handled according to local hazardous or industrial waste regulations. Common routes are mechanical wringing to recover part of the oil for reuse, collection by a licensed waste contractor, or incineration where permitted. Polypropylene has a high calorific value and leaves little residue when incinerated. Always follow the environmental regulations of the site's jurisdiction and your own HSE procedures.
